{"id":7873,"date":"2025-03-19T09:51:04","date_gmt":"2025-03-19T08:51:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=7873"},"modified":"2025-04-14T15:23:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-14T14:23:04","slug":"tom-brown-managing-legacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=7873","title":{"rendered":"Managing Legacy, by Tom Brown"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7875\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-1.jpeg 640w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-1-300x225.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Tom Brown with Programme Secretary Sue Wheeler<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In March we welcomed Tom Brown, Head Gardener at West Dean Gardens near Chichester, a garden that many of us know and love.&nbsp; Tom has been Head Gardener there for nearly six years now, taking over the reins from the indomitable duo of Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain when they retired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom\u2019s tenure had only just started when Covid lockdowns began.&nbsp; During this period West Dean had to be managed by one gardener (instead of the usual eight).&nbsp; This solitude gave Tom room for reflection.&nbsp; He decided that the only way he could take the garden forward was to do things HIS way, and whilst he was grateful for and respected the legacy that previous gardeners had left behind, he would not let it daunt him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Added to this, is the ongoing challenge of managing a garden in a rapidly changing and unpredictable climate.&nbsp; It is impossible to predict precisely how the weather will change, so Tom believes that diversity in planting is the only way to keep options as open as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-2-1024x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7877\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-2-1024x571.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-2-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-2.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom took us through some of the exciting changes that he has led at West Dean.&nbsp; The kitchen gardens are no longer solely for display, but provide ingredients for the College and Visitor Centre kitchens.&nbsp; A new \u201cdry meadow\u201d has been created on a base of crushed concrete \u2013 and is performing very well in the extremes of both drought and floods.&nbsp; The sunken garden has been reimagined on a base of sharp sand, and the pergola is getting a new border, where plants will all be labelled and named to help the Garden Design students studying at the college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-3-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7879\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-3-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/Tom-Brown-3.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Tom showed us that there are so many reasons to visit West Dean, for beauty and for inspiration, in every season.\u00a0 He is certainly making his own very individual mark on these special historic gardens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In March we welcomed Tom Brown, Head Gardener at West Dean Gardens near Chichester, a garden that many of us know and love.&nbsp; Tom has been Head Gardener there for nearly six years now, taking over the reins from the indomitable duo of Jim Buckland and Sarah Wain when they retired.
