He has been a professional gardener for over 25 years, since studying at Pershore College of Horticulture and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and has written over twenty books.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The subject of his talk was about some of the great icons featured in his book \u2018Lessons from Great Gardeners\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gardeners discussed were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>William Robinson<\/em>, who hated the formal layout of gardens and is famous for his naturalistic style gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gertrude Jekyll<\/em> who originally studied at the College of Art and brought art into the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ellen Wilmott<\/em> whose very rich godmother gave her money enabling her to indulge her very expensive obsession of her gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Beth Chatto OBE<\/em> who was a sustainable gardener before her time although her husband <em>Andrew Chatto<\/em> played a big part behind the scenes in her success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Roberto Burle Marx,<\/em> a Brazilian abstract artist who took his art into the garden and played with different shapes and sizes in his designs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ganna Walska<\/em> a Polish American who after marrying 6 times devoted her life to her operatic stage set gardens, selling $1m of her jewellery to finance her gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matthew was a very amusing speaker and Grayshott Gardeners hope he will visit again soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Matt-Biggs-and-Gordon-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Matt-Biggs-and-Gordon-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Matt-Biggs-and-Gordon-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Matt-Biggs-and-Gordon.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Matthew with our President Gordon Rae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The September talk for the Grayshott Gardeners was a highly entertaining and informative talk by Matthew Biggs.&nbsp; Matthew is a radio personality in the UK, best known for his appearances on the long running BBC Radio 4 programme Gardeners&#8217; Question Time.
