{"id":7041,"date":"2023-05-22T10:55:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-22T09:55:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=7041"},"modified":"2023-05-22T11:02:46","modified_gmt":"2023-05-22T10:02:46","slug":"pottering-with-pottage-wisley-the-flagship-garden-of-the-rhs-by-matthew-pottage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=7041","title":{"rendered":"Pottering with Pottage: Wisley, the Flagship Garden of the RHS, by Matthew Pottage"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We were delighted to welcome Matthew Pottage to speak to us at Grayshott Gardeners this month.\u00a0 Matthew was the youngest ever curator of an RHS Garden when he was appointed to lead Wisley at the age of 29.\u00a0 During the last 8 years he has overseen some of the most ambitious projects that the garden has ever undertaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"823\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wisteria-Walk-15-May-2022-823x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7051\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wisteria-Walk-15-May-2022-823x1024.jpg 823w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wisteria-Walk-15-May-2022-241x300.jpg 241w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wisteria-Walk-15-May-2022-1234x1536.jpg 1234w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Wisteria-Walk-15-May-2022-1645x2048.jpg 1645w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 823px) 100vw, 823px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With Wisley just up the road, it is a garden that many of us know and love \u2013 so it was fascinating to get a peek behind the scenes.\u00a0 For example, next time we walk down the beautiful avenue of cherry trees that flank the new Garden entrance we will remember what it is like to have a shopping list of 150 semi-mature cherry trees (white flowering only please), all of which have to be quarantined for a year whilst they are closely monitored for pests and diseases.\u00a0 This is gardening on a gigantic scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7047\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Crocus-on-the-Wisley-Conifer-Lawn-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We also learned about the newest addition to the garden \u2013 Hilltop.\u00a0 Its laboratories and three new gardens are now one of the go-to destinations in Wisley.\u00a0 Each garden has a distinct purpose \u2013 the wildlife garden proves that catering for wildlife doesn\u2019t have to be \u201cmessy\u201d.
