{"id":6404,"date":"2022-07-18T11:29:25","date_gmt":"2022-07-18T10:29:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=6404"},"modified":"2022-07-18T11:29:26","modified_gmt":"2022-07-18T10:29:26","slug":"beautiful-buddlejas-by-peter-moore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=6404","title":{"rendered":"Beautiful Buddlejas, by Peter Moore"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In July we welcomed Peter Moore to Grayshott Gardeners, to talk to us about Buddlejas \u2013 something he is very well qualified to do, as keeper of the National Collection of this Genus at Longstock Nursery in Hampshire.\u00a0 He started developing the collection in 1993, and by sourcing cuttings and seed from around the world has built it up to an impressive display of international acclaim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6406\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-1024x1536.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-1365x2048.jpg 1365w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Longstock-for-Buddleja-and-Butterflies-scaled.jpg 1706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Buddlejas get their name from the Reverend Adam Buddle, an English cleric and botanist from the 17<sup>th<\/sup> Century.&nbsp; They are naturally present in all the Continents of the world bar Europe and Australasia, and many of today\u2019s garden plants are hybrids between species from different continents.&nbsp; Peter has introduced many hybrids himself \u2013 including \u201cPink Pagoda\u201d and \u201cSugar Plum\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter then took us through what he considers to be the best garden-worthy&nbsp;varieties. He warned us that some species don\u2019t quite live up to their advertising hype.&nbsp; The Buzz Series, for example, is free flowering but not the dwarf variety that it was initially billed as.&nbsp; They can reach 2 meters in height \u2013 enough to block most windows if planted in a flower bed just outside!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He showed us what a wide range of flower colours are available, from the darkest purple through to magentas, reds and pinks, and they can be upright or have a weeping form.\u00a0 Leaves can be plain or variegated \u2013 and some flowers can be variegated too, like the new introduction \u201cBerries and Cream\u201d.\u00a0 Most of the garden varieties are hardy in the UK, but a few special ones need a glasshouse to overwinter them successfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Buddleja-davidii-Adonis-Blue91-1-1900x665-1-1024x358.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6408\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Buddleja-davidii-Adonis-Blue91-1-1900x665-1-1024x358.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Buddleja-davidii-Adonis-Blue91-1-1900x665-1-300x105.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Buddleja-davidii-Adonis-Blue91-1-1900x665-1-1536x538.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Buddleja-davidii-Adonis-Blue91-1-1900x665-1.jpg 1900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Peter also gave us tips on how to grow Buddlejas well, in full sun with well drained soil, and how to prune them properly.&nbsp;
