She also went on several plant hunting trips for the gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-dbd218b4-94c9-42c0-8689-7ec1ff53545f\">Pamela started by explaining the derivation of the name Kew \u2013 originally Cayo \u2013 which describes a dock (Cay or Quay) on a spur of land (Ho \u2013 like in Westward Ho!) on the River Thames in West London.&nbsp; The Royal connection comes from its founder Princess Augusta, mother of George III.&nbsp; And the Gardens (note the plural) comes from the fact that it is actually an amalgamation of several gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-0106a462-db2c-42f7-888f-8d1f3bd61eb3\">It was a really interesting evening and Pamela gave us lots of reasons to go and visit the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew very soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-6ae77ed7-33b2-45dc-9766-9c1618dc2797\">June Meeting<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-b003c895-e1d8-4100-a31c-6c49b2723f6a\">We are delighted to welcome back Dave Goulson to speak at our meeting this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-5dfcb9cf-d1b7-493f-b140-58840fcffc5b\">Dave, Author of Sting in a Tale, first came to Grayshott in 2016 when he gave us a fascinating talk on Bumblebees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-a9f8d241-bed3-4829-be7c-a6914e0d0356\">This time his lecture is entitled \u2018My Jungle Garden &#8211; gardening to save the planet\u2019 and will be all about making our green spaces more insect and wildlife friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-8c41023b-019e-4339-b4b6-8c5221c3bd69\">There are already a myriad of small creatures that live in our gardens but with a few minor changes we can encourage even more and Dave will tell us how and also explain just why this is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-1af554c4-c961-4c37-b63b-032d6e416b10\">The meeting will be held in <strong>Grayshott Village Hall<\/strong> , on <strong>&nbsp;Wednesday June 8th 2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-59388f07-7586-4781-8d88-bcc92c5890f7\">Light refreshments will be served and there will be a secondhand book sale<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-ba9191f1-cacf-4d04-a37b-a972078d7487\">Doors open at 7.30pm ready for the lecture to begin at 8pm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-04a5b0c3-cbb4-4a74-99bf-7551b8198ecb\">Summer Show<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-b83d16b1-5d17-4e6f-9be5-612aab702fdb\">We\u2019re looking forward very much to our Summer Show, and I\u2019m sure there will be some great exhibits in all classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-b4462c6a-310d-4696-a533-9f99185742f8\">As a trial to make things easier for everyone involved , we\u2019re changing the arrangements slightly.&nbsp; There is no apology for including it in our newsletter. Calibrachoa is an outstanding summer plant for a Grayshott gardener, especially for a container or a hanging basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\" id=\"block-8abd6674-9a28-470c-aec3-89e0947af951\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/calabriocha-2.jpg\" alt=\"This image has an empty alt attribute; its file name is calabriocha-2.jpg\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-f26919c1-3b9a-444e-92db-d75f5467b782\">\u2018Miniature Petunias on speed\u2019 is the nearest description I can dream up for Calibrachoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-82715e0e-f0ad-4157-8669-baed0366eee0\">The plants are full of multicoloured flowers from late April until autumn, growing best in a sunny position. It does not need any deadheading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-038fc046-553d-4fb2-82b4-8c318da6f0dd\">Calibrachoa is a plant that is well visited by both bees and butterflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-48fa3ead-8d3f-412b-9d60-8460e4d4a3b6\">Intensive hybridisation in recent years has led to a wide variety of colours being available<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-0cc5b7bc-d452-4094-a0c3-88286abb5943\">Having a a trailing habit Calibarchoa is ideal for pots, hanging baskets or cascading over a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-9c5747df-7eea-4473-a475-8895966b8abf\">As it was so successful last year in our garden, fresh plants have already been bought for 2022. Calibrachoa plants are inexpensive and reliable in a sunny position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-af259ef5-e4cf-46e1-bb9f-f0344ac5fd68\">If you have not grown it before it is suggested that you might like to give it a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"block-7180e06b-1f88-45ec-84df-eca155262edd\">Jobs for the month<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-7740a982-ff18-4446-b84b-12d81e437979\">1. Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-dbf20930-ffab-42ad-854e-41e87ac29a46\">Choose vibrant bedding plants for a short-term show or herbs, shrubs and evergreens for a long-lasting display.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-3c74503c-1402-4229-a8a4-a9e61dc072dd\">2. Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-835bf189-c478-4c98-8a6e-7e379035ec10\">Watering is key to growing plants well, so here we look at how to get it just right. This not only means providing the water our gardens need, but using it wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-bcc85fde-0489-4ef6-a242-e0c28b9d8c35\">3. Pinch out sideshoots on tomatoes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-477ff8f7-99c9-4fb7-8893-f6833fb1274f\">Removing the side-shoots is simple \u2013 every time you water, check the plant for any shoots sprouting just above each leaf, from the joint between the leaf and the stem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-794f8b70-9f10-40d9-bd12-5443ee169509\">4. Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; and early potatoes<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-7a24f501-1c4e-48aa-b765-b048b622a13d\">5. Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-d1b20d14-4171-4472-956d-dd90d6f8b99f\">6. Mow lawns at least once a week \u2013 but consider leaving some areas uncut for wildlife<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-0b5d932a-a28a-4fbc-8d3c-3ba880ee0580\">7.Plant out summer bedding<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-46a8a0d4-3c99-4e8a-98fe-ce4c317a5966\">8. Stake tall or floppy plants<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-6614fbe7-ab92-4252-9547-b6bac97918ff\">9. Prune many spring-flowering shrubs<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-a4dd2074-0c1d-433e-9261-156c6de4e19a\">10.
