The plants and shrubs might be getting a watering, but so too are the weeds!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am so delighted that our August lecture \u2018The Plant Doctor: Acidic Soils and Dry, Shady Locations\u2019 is going ahead in-person. You received an e-mail recently with the details to help keep us all safe. These are set out again on the page 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am also thrilled that we had so many entrants in the virtual Summer Show. This was our first ever virtual show \u2013 and I hope our last!&nbsp; Thank you to you our members for entering and the Shows Committee for making it happen, congratulations to the winners. The number of entries was high as was the quality of \u2018exhibits\u2019 \u2013 the entries can be seen on our website at this <a href=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?page_id=119\">link<\/a> and we include some photos on the next page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking forward to seeing you on 11<sup>th<\/sup> August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best wishes, Anne Waddell<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>YOUR OPINION MATTERS!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you to all of you who completed the survey seeking feedback on the newsletter and the website. Your opinions really are important in terms of shaping the club\u2019s future development. The results currently are being analysed. They will be considered by the Committee in September, and we will report back in October\/November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>WHAT IS IT? Once again, Kathleen Bird, President of the Ludshott Photographic Club, kindly agreed to judge the entries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathleen chose the photograph of Karen Cozens of a snake tucked away in the corner of her little pond as the winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathleen said that it fitted the brief perfectly and was the most imaginative of all the entries.&nbsp; It would have been difficult to capture that instant, but it had been well done.&nbsp; The photograph was well exposed and composed.&nbsp; The snake eyeing the fly on the rock made it! Karen wins the \u00a320 first prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"277\" height=\"184\" src=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Picture12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5556\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Karen Cozens\u2019 winning entry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kathleen also highly commended:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Liz Munson\u2019s \u201cCat amongst the Fuchsias\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Sheila Aitken\u2019s \u201cA Cosy Garden Scene\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Carol Wass\u2019s \u201cSquirrel in the Feeder\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These photos are on the GG\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=5204\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to all who entered \u2013 it is much appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AUGUST 2021 MEETING<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This month, on Wednesday 11<sup>th<\/sup> August, we are really pleased to be holding an in-person meeting in the Village Hall. The lecture is being given by Roger Hirons and is entitled \u201cThe Plant Doctor: Acidic Soils and Dry, Shady Locations\u201d. Roger has over 35 years\u2019 experience in the horticultural industry and is an enthusiastic speaker and broadcaster on all things related to plants. He qualified at Pershore College of Horticulture, after which he spent many years running plant centres. Roger\u2019s talk will give ideas and tips to help us achieve good results with minimum effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lecture is at 7.30 for 8.00 pm. The arrangements will be slightly different due to present circumstances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-face coverings to be worn on arrival, when moving around and on leaving the Hall, but optional when seated<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-seats will be a chair width apart (approx. 18\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-the Hall will be well ventilated<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-there will be no refreshments<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-there will be a PLANT SALE<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-in order to avoid over-crowding, on arrival there will be three people manning the \u2018Sign-In\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8211; no pens will be used by attendees, so please give your name clearly to the Committee Member who will tick your names off the attendance list (we don\u2019t always recognise people when wearing masks!).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thank you for your cooperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>NAME THAT PLANT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were some very interesting and unusual plants entered in the virtual Summer Show; if you would like to know what a particular plant is, please email&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:shows@grayshottgardeners.net\">shows@grayshottgardeners.net<\/a>, and we will contact the entrant and let you know. We can also include the photo and the identification in a future newsletter if several people ask about the same entry. Don\u2019t forget, all the photos are on the <a href=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>POTATO COMPETITION 2021<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A huge thank you to everyone who entered the Potato Competition this year (class 49 of the Summer Show), to Mavis Hallt, judge, and to Gordon Rae for organising it. You have excelled yourselves. There were 19 entries out of the 25 who collected their seed potatoes in February, more than any previous year. One more and they would not have fitted on Paul Coleman\u2019s table!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our judge, Mavis Hallt, the wife of the late Mike Hallt, after whom the cup is named, arrived armed with her list of \u2018Judging Criteria and Staging Hints\u2019, ready to make some difficult decisions \u2013 see our <a href=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?p=5170\">website<\/a> for what Mavis was looking for and photos of the exhibits.
