These ranged from empty but\ndecorative pots, to pots with one plant, or containers with\ncombinations of various species of plants, often with phorbiums to\nadd height and an architectural touch. Stuart favoured shrubs over\nbedding plants, as the latter are labour-intensive, although\nexcellent for providing colour when planted in window-boxes; we saw\nslides of some magnificent pub front displays. Nevertheless,\ncolourful displays are also possible without annual flowers, as shown\nby the Christmas-themed schemes in a collection of similar containers\ndevised by Stuart. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Answering a question from the audience, Stuart admitted to always adding crocks in plant pots \u201cto keep slugs and insects out\u201d.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The speaker at Grayshott Gardeners\u2019 September lecture was Stuart Lees, a trained horticulturist and experienced head gardener, who now runs his own Garden Design and Consulting business.
