Since 1987, the Gardens &amp; Estate team and lately \nMartin, have devoted much time and effort in researching the specimens \nin Mary&#8217;s collection and bringing them back once more to Hampton Court. \nIt is one of the three National Plant Collections at Hampton Court and \nhas now been recogni\n\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other\nglasshouses contained masses of bedding plants not usually seen at\ngarden centres but well-known to the Victorians, as most of the\nplants produced here are destined to fit in with the historic\nsettings of the Palaces, flowering in (what now seem) old-fashioned\ncolours. These include pelargoniums, lantanas, and also coleus with\nvivid colour variations in the leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery alignwide columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0362-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3065\" data-link=\"http:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?attachment_id=3065\" class=\"wp-image-3065\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0362-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0362-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0360-1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"3085\" data-link=\"http:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/?attachment_id=3085\" class=\"wp-image-3085\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0360-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/RIMG0360-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Hampton\nCourt holds two other National Plant Collections, Lantana, whose many\ncultivars have flowers that change their colour (from yellow to white\nand orange to purple) as they mature, and Heliotropoium, or the\nCherry Pie Plant (its purple flowers smell of cherries and vanilla).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet\nanother glasshouse we were shown contains the Citrus collection,\nshowing off their oranges and lemons \u2013 these normally tender trees\nhad been put into period-appropriate pots which the Nursery has\nspecifically made for display in their formal settings during the\nsummer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Martin\ntold us that the original Victorian glasshouses had been destroyed to\nmake way for more modern and efficient ones during the 60\u2019s and\n70\u2019s; like the Victorian ones, they have been overtaken by later\ndesigns and technology, but lack of funds mean the latter remain an\nitem on the team\u2019s wish list for the foreseeable future. \nMeanwhile, the Nursery manages to grow 40% of the bedding plants from\ncuttings and seed, and the remaining 60% from tiny plug plants which\nare cheaper and more efficient to buy in, a credit to the staff, and\nproof of what can be achieved with devotion and skill, even without\nthe latest technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"http:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AQ8A2162-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AQ8A2162-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AQ8A2162-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/grayshottgardeners.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/AQ8A2162.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Pot filler machine<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ntour ended with a brief survey of the workshops and tractor and\nmachinery shed containing trolleys to move large trays and tables,\nand for picking up (very heavy) tubs;
